Okay!
So basically I feel like a really really bad person right now. I lost my password to this account and I recently just found it in a random pile of papers.
This is not fair to you guys so I am going to be deleting this tumblr and instead post Geology stuff on my normal one. Which is www.tumblr.com/darkasmoonlight I believe. In any case I will be following all of you on there instead.
I am so so sorry!
These are pictures of Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and it formed around forty million years ago by cooling magma deep beneath a volcano.
Actually the volcano started out in a cone shape and then gradually erosion occurred, cutting gullies into it until only the intrusive rock below remained. This once tall volcano is but a shadow of its former self, now only two hundred and sixty meters high. But it is no less magnificent in its beauty.
(This is the last time I’ll say this: information provided by textbooks, pictures by the internet. If you want the exact sites/citations, message me and I will be glad to provide.)
These two beautiful pictures show a geological feature known as a fjord. Fjord are formed when glaciers carve out a deep u-shaped valley in coastal mountain rages. Eventually the water stored in the glaciers flowed back into the sea causing the sea level to rise and fill the valleys.
Fjords as defined in geological textbooks is a flooded glacial valley and are characterized by their steep walls of glacial polished rock. Some of the most well know fjords can be found on the coasts of Norway (where these two are located), British Columbia, and New Zealand.
(This information was derived from Essentials of Geology, chapter 15 pg 417-18. The pictures were from googling “Norwegian Fjords.” If you want the exact sites, contact me.)
This is just your friendly neighborhood Geology blog! As this week is my midterm/project due time, I will be not be able to post much of anything yet, but that will change dear people. That will change. For now, enjoy this beautiful picture of our home, Earth.
